Cumin in perfumery

Cumin or reinvented sensuality

The spicy olfactory family is very rich in spices. Among the latter, we distinguish hot spices such as cinnamon, cloves, and cold spices such as cardamom and coriander. As for cumin, it is a slightly different spice, because it brings an animal note to the compositions. A very sensual, strong and persistent animal odor, but sometimes a smell of sweat. In perfumery, animal notes are very useful. Not only do they have the capacity to fix the other components, but in addition, they reinforce their fragrances. Cumin has these capacities, and when used with precision and sparing, it always gives scents of strength and character, as with the perfume Le Mâle by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Here, cumin is placed in the middle note, accompanied by cinnamon. These two spices are enhanced by orange blossom. Jean-Paul Gaultier's first fragrance for men is summed up with a very oriental and very sensual fragrance.

Cumin and its different olfactory associations

Like its spicy family, cumin is found mainly in oriental, woody or chypre flavors. It is therefore found quite naturally in Arabia by Serge Lutens, which is an oriental-woody. Here, cumin is positioned as a heart note, accompanied by cardamom, nutmeg and cloves. A very spicy heart which goes perfectly with woody notes such as cistus labdanum and which gives a rich and sunny scent. Another oriental fragrance, but with its spicy facet where we find cumin in the top note, it is Kenzo Jungle, a perfume for women by Kenzo. The elephant, Kenzo's favorite animal, dominates the bottle. Inside, the mandarin amazes at first. The touch of gluttony is brought by the liquorice, and the base of the perfume gives an elusive and incredibly powerful fragrance.

Cumin, an oriental spice, is mainly used in cooking. Its smell is close to anise, but the cumin gives off animal notes, which makes it a rather special and sensual spice. In perfumery, it is mainly found in oriental, woody and chypre fragrances. It is a material that is still little used in fine perfumery, but which has enormous potential.
